I bet you all have heard of Susan Boyle!

She’s a 47 year old Scottish singer, and a church volunteer, who got a lot of the world’s attention when she went on the British show Britain’s Got Talent and auditioned as a contestant. She sang the song “I Dreamed a Dream”.

Before she sang, I think almost everyone, the judges, the audience and all viewers, doubted her because of how she looked, since her appearance didn’t look so tidy. But the minute she started singing, everyone was caught off guard, especially Simon Cowell! She shocked him so much, she’s being known as “the woman who shut up Simon Cowell”

She got through to the next round, with a standing ovation and three yeses, one being “the biggest yes I have ever given somebody” from Piers, one of the judges of the show. And also, tears from Amanda, the only female judge.

Her singing and the shock has made her an overnight hit, and she’s been interviewed on many TV shows, like Good Morning America. Her story has also been in many news channels, like Al Arabiya, and many others in places like Israel, China, and Germany.

To be honest, I had my doubts about Susan Boyle when I saw her for the very first time on YouTube. I thought she wouldn’t be a good singer because I was being stereotypical judging by appearance, mainly because I, and so many other people, didn’t think a person that looked like Susan Boyle would have such an amazing voice. But after she performed, it caught me so off guard, and taught me and I think everyone else a lesson, a very important one too.  I think what makes us think that, is the media. We are so used to seeing amazing singers looking so thin and “perfect” that we don’t acknowledge the fact that not all singers might look like that. It really connects with the whole “Don’t judge a book by its cover” idea. There’s a lot more than meets the eye, and this definitely proves it!
